Project SAFE of Lutheran Family Health Centers has been providing teen leadership and HIV peer education programming since 1989 at the Project Reach Youth site in Brooklyn. Project SAFE trains youth between the ages of 14 and 19 to provide life- saving information to their peers through workshops, performances, and community outreach. Our trained peer educators ensure that youth in their communities have the skills, information and resources they need to make healthy decisions. Since different youth are reached in different ways, our program also hosts HIV testing and performance events where youth have an opportunity to express themselves through dance, spoken word, theater and art, while also having an opportunity to get HIV testing and counseling. Project SAFE provides youth with the support and the opportunities they need to not only avoid risky behaviors, but to develop to their full potential and become agents of change in their communities.
